Featured artisan: Pei Li

Hi there!
I am really happy to announce the first featured artisan in TFL blog,
Go and say hello to the adorable girl behind these lovely creations, Pei Li.

--Please tell us a bit about yourself.
My name is Pei Li and I live in Singapore with my family. I am currently working as a product design and development manager at friendup.com (a social networking website), and am also a dollhouse miniature artisan and teacher.

--Apart from creating things, what do you do?
I have lots of interests and hobbies. Besides dollhouse miniatures, I love cross stitch, listening to music, watching movies, traveling, photography, jogging, cycling.

--Where does your inspiration come from?
I find inspiration in everyday life. Most of the things I create are things I love in real life. I find it easy to start from noticing the little things in my everyday ife. I also visit blogs of bakers, flower arrangement artists, and through their photos, I can always find something inspirational. I also browse through a lot of home décor magazines. I collect photos
of things that inspires me.

--What would you like to do in the future?
I dream about being able to travel overseas to teach others how to make realistic dollhouse miniatures. That would be one of my dreams. Apart from that, I just live life as genuinely as I can everyday, and put in the best in whatever I choose to do in future.

--What does handmade mean to you?
Handmade has a special and important meaning to me all my life. Since I was a child, I have been surrounded by members of my family who, in some sort of way always handmade something. My grandmother was very good in sewing and so is my grand aunt. I still keep a quilt that is made by my grand aunt which I treasure a lot. My mother is also very good in handicrafts when she was much younger and I remember a blouse which she sewed beads on to make it a really unique piece that everyone complimented it whenever I wore it. I knew all the hard work and special touches that each handmade piece brings and till this way, I continue to bring that to all the work I do.

--How would you describe your creative process?
I don’t know if I could exactly describe my creative process because I don’t have a fixed way of creating. Sometimes it’s a combination of inspirations that I’ve seen from photos somewhere, and from there I add my own personal touches to that in my mind. The actual end product might look quite different from what I imagine earlier on, as the creative process grows and transform during the process, but I usually embrace and go with the flow. There are also some days where I would put the work aside for a day to think about the next step. So the work process for each piece is always different.

--Tell us about a funny experience you had while working.
I can’t recall any funny experience truly, but I would say that whenever I get engrossed making a particular piece, I’m truly enjoying myself and there is an inexplicable sense of calm and happiness, and before I realize it, time has just flew by!
